The Southern California indie pop band Buellton formed in 1998. Essentially sprouting from the split of a band called Brown, Buellton is comprised of bassist Cliff Hayes, drummer Erik Herzog, guitarist Andrew Giacumakis, vocalist/guitarist John Nygren, and guitarist/knob twiddler Tad Wagner, they debuted in 2001 with Acetone and the Radar Bros.
The first release to come from Buellton, Avenue of the Flags is an atmospheric, guitar-band-ic, medium-core pop record. Buellton recorded in their warehouse/cooler/practice space “Buonapasta” on an AKAI analog 12-track and some ADAT 8-track. Bringing to mind the guitar/recording wit of the Flaming Lips, the moody sparseness of Low and the existential tone of Richard Buckner, Avenue of the Flags is wondrous, patient, pop-craft: sensitive, brooding and hopeful all the same.
